First Lady Michelle Obama Hosts Local Elected Officials at Special White House Event

Over forty local elected officials from across the country joined First Lady Michelle Obama and the National League of Cities (NLC) at the White House on Wednesday, July 10 to celebrate the success of Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC).

Elected officials heard from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary for Health Dr. Howard K. Koh on the accomplishments made by the more than 330 communities who have pledged their commitment to achieving the initiative’s five goals. To date, NLC has awarded these communities over 1,000 bronze, silver and gold medals for their accomplishments in achieving the five LMCTC goals.

NLC Executive Director Clarence Anthony spoke about how LMCTC supports and empowers local elected offificals to help be part of the solution so that children are able to reach their greatest potential. Following Mr. Anthony, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs David Agnew facilitated a panel discussion of Hernando, Mississippi Mayor Chip Johnson; Missoula County, Montana Commissioner Jean Curtiss, Chester, Pennsylvania Mayor John Linder; and Knoxville, Tennessee Mayor Madeline Rogero, who provided those in attendance their on the ground perspectives of what is working locally.
